Bond Priorities

Building on the successful experience of implementing the previous bond, Metro Council, zoo staff and leadership, stakeholders, and the community spent the last year developing the following set of priorities that will act as a guide for future investments:

  • Animal well-being: Enhance the lives of animals in our care.

  • Inspiring educational experiences: Connecting community to the wonders of wildlife.

  • Infrastructure health: Replace aging and/or failing infrastructure.

  • Risk and readiness: High return on investment and project value.

  • Strategic alignment: Alignment with conservation, financial sustainability, and staff experience.

  • Community oversight: Inclusion of a community oversight committee.

Highlights of Proposed Investments Include:

Protecting animal health and well-being

by replacing outdated habitats for sea otters, penguins, giraffes and other beloved animals, which are currently housed in some of the oldest areas at the zoo, to meet current standards and best practices.

Improve conservation education and visitor experiences,

particularly in the Coastal Shores and Africa areas, highlighting the wonder of wildlife and the zoo’s critical species conservation work in the northwest and beyond.

Increase sustainability

by reducing energy and water consumption in new habitats, replacing failing infrastructure and supporting the zoo’s ambitious conservation goals.

Improve accessibility

for visitors of all abilities in the zoo entry, pathways and rest areas.
